Bill Mumford’s Sound Encounters in TiMax Spatial Studio with Sonosphere

Photographer Bill Mumford had never set foot in a sound studio. He approached Sonosphere, who work with TiMax Spatial at the Spatial Studio in Tileyard, to help realise his Masters of the Arts final projects. Both were built from recordings he made on the high moorlands of the North Pennines.

Arriving at the studio with his stereo headphone mix, which he described as flat and undifferentiated, Mumford heard the work played back properly for the first time and could finally understand what he had been aiming for. Sonosphere Technical Director Phil Wright demonstrated the nuances of a spatial mix, starting with more layering to create texture and tone. The additional space then allowed a greater spread across the highlighted sounds, so that individual birds hold their own place rather than blurring together.

Wright also taught him to monitor binaurally, so the composing could carry on after he left the building.

Mumford wanted the finished pieces broadcast as close to the quality he’d experienced at Tileyard as he could manage. That meant a system he could take out to community venues and set up himself. Martin Audio Ltd, via distribution partner dBS Solutions, supplied a 7.1 rig built around eight ADORN A55 loudspeakers with an SX110 handling low-frequency extension, turnkey with amplification, interface, stands and cables.
